What I’ve learned about pricing machine embroidery and appliqué designs on Etsy

Yesterday I had to pat myself on the back when I caught a glimpse of my daughter in a shirt I had appliquéd for her a few months ago with my retro dove of peace design.  It just looked so cute on her!  I think this design is such a winner. But here is the problem… no one else seems to think so.  My retro dove applique design just expired on my Etsy store which means it didn’t sell after four months of being listed on my site…. Seriously? I don’t get it.

I have a hypothesis about why an embroidery design doesn’t sell on Etsy.  Either

1) It is too common and buyers can get it in too many other places. If that is the case – then price becomes an issue.  If it is a similar to a design that is available through another store, then most buyers go with the cheapest product.

2) It’s too expensive.  People don’t want to take a risk buying from a new seller (me).  A great price might put them over the edge to make the purchase.

3) Not everyone can use it.  When it comes to embroidery and appliqué designs, I am learning that  you must offer a 4″ x 4″ design if you want your design to sell.  There are just too many people out there who only have a small hoop.

4) People simply don’t like the design itself or the way it is executed. I am wondering how a fresh picture might make a difference in sales.

With all these factors in mind – i am making revisions to designs that are expiring and reposting them.  For the retro dove appliqué design, specifically, I added a smaller size to fit in the 4″ x 4″ hoop, and I lowered the price a bit.  I am also thinking that I should stitch this out on some hand towels as it would make a cute Christmas themed design… maybe that might make people want to buy it.

Retro peace dove appliqué design on a t-shirt

A few weeks ago i digitized an appliqué design of a retro dove of peace. It actually turned out pretty well and I had been thinking that I might stitch it out on a t-shirt for one of my girls.

I happened to have laying around a (no joke) $1 t-shirt from Walgreens with a cute little pink trim. The white and pink shirt matched perfectly with the small fabric piece I purchased at the Fabric Nosherie the other day.

So.., I stitched out the retro dove using the pink fabric as my appliqué piece, and I am very pleased with the results. I think it looks pretty young and hip with a wink to the past.
